An Academic Essential Workshop on ‘’Wind Tunnel Experiments, Techniques and Application’’ Organised by Parul University.

Parul University under the shade of the Industry Defined Research Project entitled “Reduction of Water Consumption and Optimizing Efficiency of Thermal Power Plants through the use of Air Cooled Condensers” which is a project running under the funding of Royal Academy of Engineering, UK under the esteemed Newton Bhabha Fund, took the initiative of organizing a workshop on “Wind Tunnel Experiments-Techniques and Applications” held on the 17th of March 2018.
The workshop was graced by some of the most elite personalities, such as Dr.Sanjay Mittal who is a Ph.D holder, with an M.S. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Minnesota, USA as well as a B.Tech in Aeronautical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. He is also the current head of National Wind Tunnel Facility. The workshop was inaugurated by Dr.Sanjay Mittal, Mr.Rajen Pandya of L&T PTI, Dr.H S Vijaykumar, Registrar, Dr. M R Patel, Dr. F S Xavier and Dr.P.G.K.Murthy from Parul University.
This gathering of intellectuals was attended by over 400 participants and represented by 35 Faculty Members and 380 students of M.Tech and B.Tech in areas of Aeronautical, CSE and Mechanical Engineering and various branches of Engineering from vast reputed universities such as MS University, Gujarat Technology University and also to note, colleges like SVIT, ITM Universe etc. About 10 managers from companies like L&T, Siemens etc., participated in the workshop. This initiative was greatly appreciated by all the stakeholders involved from the academicians to the industrialists.
Session-1: The Session started with Brief History of Wind Tunnel, followed by the basic structure of Modern Wind Tunnel along with its classification. Thereafter the speaker showcased the variety of Wind Tunnel Facility available across the world along with their specification.
Session-2: Here in this session, the key speaker explained the mathematical principles to be used for scaling down a prototype into model without much loss of information. He used several case studies to make audience understand about the complexity involved in the Wind Tunnel Testing. He clearly explained about how the model should be prepared for Structural and Fluid Flow Analysis.
Session-3: The speaker covered the techniques to measure Pressure, Force, Velocity, Strain, Temperature, etc. Here the speaker talked about the advanced velocity measuring techniques like, Hot Wire Anemometer & Particle Image Velocimetry. He also discussed the methods for visualization of Flow using Smoke Injector. He also talked about how exactly one can figure out the point of Flow separation using Oil film on the surface of the body.
Session-4: Here he briefly mentioned about the work carried out at the National Wind Tunnel Facility, IIT Kanpur under his supervision.
Each and every detail involved within the workshop proved to be of great utility for both the students and the various stakeholders who took part in it. The initiative Parul
University took, is by all means the most in-depth of practical expectation especially in the field of engineering and it proves to be of great impact in fostering a practical academic atmosphere. Such forms of practical techno-social initiatives are by all means at the epitome of this century.
