MIT to invest $1 billion in college for AI, will open in September 2019

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) will create a new college to integrate artificial intelligence, machine learning and data science into other academic disciplines. The new institute, to be called MIT Stephen A Schwarzman College of Computing and being set up on an investment of $1 billion.

The college will be opened in September 2019. The upcoming MIT institute has been funded in part by Blackstone co-founder and CEO Stephen Schwarzman, who contributed $350 million toward the College of Computing.

It will be based within a new building on the MIT campus, which is expected to be ready by 2022. According to MIT president L Rafael Reif, the institute will constitute both a global center for computing research and education, and an intellectual foundry for powerful new AI tools.

The MIT Schwarzman College of Computing will require the creation of 50 new faculty positions, that will not only build the new college, but also provide a collaborative structure to MIT’s other schools.

The institute will also create a platform for public policy and ethical considerations with respect to data science and other fields.

The research centres that will cooperate for research and academic opportunities under the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing include the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab, the Institute for Data, Systems, and Society and the Operations Research Center. In the meantime, MIT has begun a search for the college’s dean, and will consult with the MIT Community for the same.
